My Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On. What Should I Do?

If your air conditioning system refuses to start up, you may understandably assume you need to give our team at MVP Home Services a call. However, before you reach out, you should try a few simple troubleshooting steps. You may be able to resolve the issue yourself and restore comfort in just a few minutes.

Try the following steps when your AC won’t turn on:

  • Check your thermostat. Make sure it is set to "cool" and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. Your thermostat can sometimes be inadvertently set to “heat” or to an unusually high temperature. Also, check for dead batteries and replace them if necessary.
  • Inspect your breaker box. Locate your home's electrical panel or breaker box. Find the breaker switch that controls your air conditioner. Sometimes, a power surge or electrical issue can trip the breaker. If you find the breaker in the "off" position, switch it back on. If it immediately trips again, you are likely dealing with a more serious electrical problem and should not try to repeatedly reset it. Fortunately, our team also includes licensed electricians who can get to the bottom of what is wrong.
  • Examine your outdoor unit. Confirm there isn't any debris blocking the fan or the coils. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, or other obstructions. You should also listen for any unusual noises. A unit that is humming but not starting might have a different problem than one that is completely silent. Even if you can’t get your AC equipment up and running yourself, these observations can help our technicians diagnose and fix the issue faster.
  • Check the air filter. A clogged or dirty air filter restricts airflow, which can cause your AC system to shut down. If you feel comfortable doing so, turn off the system and check the air filter, which is typically located in the air handler or a return vent. If it looks dirty, replace it with a clean one and attempt to turn on your AC equipment again. A clean filter also helps your system run more efficiently.

If your AC system still won’t turn on after completing these tasks, there is probably a bigger problem with your equipment that requires repairs. We offer same-day support and weekend appointments and can efficiently diagnose the underlying issue.

Signs You Need Professional Air Conditioning Repairs

Small problems with your air conditioning system can quickly become major, expensive repairs or even premature system replacements if you put off addressing them. Addressing signs of trouble early on helps you prevent a complete system breakdown, save you money on energy bills, and maintain a comfortable indoor environment.

You should schedule AC repairs if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Strange noises. Your AC system should run relatively quietly. Grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds coming from either the indoor or outdoor unit often signal a mechanical problem. A high-pitched squeal could mean a failing motor bearing, while grinding noises can indicate a compressor issue. We can diagnose the source of the noise and fix the problem before it causes more damage.
  • Weak airflow. If you notice weak airflow from your vents, your system may have a clogged air filter, a problem with the blower fan, or a leak in the ductwork. Poor airflow reduces cooling capacity and makes your unit work harder, increasing your energy bills. We can inspect your system and implement a solution that restores proper airflow.
