My Furnace Won’t Turn On. What Should I Do?

If your furnace refuses to start, you may be tempted to give our team at MVP Home Services a call right away. However, some of the most common causes of a furnace failing to turn on are surprisingly simple to fix. You may be able to resolve the problem yourself and restore warmth to your home or business without a service call.

Try the following troubleshooting steps when your furnace won’t turn on:

  • Check your thermostat. Your thermostat settings could be to blame for a lack of heat. Verify that your thermostat is set to "heat" and that the temperature is higher than the current room temperature. A low battery can also prevent your thermostat from communicating with the furnace, so try replacing them. If your thermostat is programmable, check the settings to confirm it's not in a "hold" or "off" mode.
  • Inspect the power supply. Next, confirm that your furnace has power. One of the most common culprits is a tripped circuit breaker in your home or business's electrical panel. Find the breaker associated with your furnace and flip it all the way to the "off" position before flipping it back to "on." If the breaker trips again immediately, you have a more serious electrical problem and shouldn’t attempt to reset it again. Instead, reach out to our professional electricians, who can diagnose and resolve the issue. You should also look for a power switch near the furnace itself. This switch often looks like a regular light switch and may have been accidentally turned off.
  • Examine your air filter. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow so severely that it causes your furnace to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution. Pull out the air filter and hold it up to the light. If you can't see light passing through it, it's time for a replacement. You can generally replace a dirty air filter yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. A dirty filter not only stops your furnace from working but also lowers its efficiency and can cause long-term damage.
  • Look for a pilot light or ignition issue. If you have an older furnace with a pilot light, check to see if it's lit. If it's out, you can often follow the manufacturer's instructions to relight it (again, if you feel comfortable doing so). Many modern furnaces have an electronic ignition system. These systems often have a fault code display. Consult your owner's manual to understand what the code means. These codes can help speed up the professional repair process.

If you still can’t get your heating system working after taking these steps, it’s time to turn to the professionals. We are available on weekends and can provide same-day service.

Signs You Need Professional Heating Repairs

Putting off addressing a struggling heating system can lead to bigger problems down the road, including a complete breakdown when you need your furnace or boiler most. Addressing potential issues promptly not only helps prevent more expensive repairs but also keeps your energy bills from skyrocketing due to inefficiency. Once our heating technicians have diagnosed the issue, we can provide transparent advice on whether repairs will restore reliable warmth or if replacement is necessary.

We encourage you to schedule a service call if you notice any of the following issues with your heating equipment:

  • Strange noises. Your furnace or boiler shouldn’t be especially loud. Clanging, banging, rattling, or squealing noises from your heating equipment generally signal a loose or broken part. We have the expertise to identify the source of these sounds, whether it's a worn-out fan belt, a failing motor, or a cracked heat exchanger. Ignoring these noises can lead to a total system failure.
  • Uneven heating. If some rooms feel warm and others remain cold, your heating system likely has a problem. This could be due to a malfunctioning thermostat, a clogged air filter restricting airflow, or a problem with your ductwork. Our technicians can perform a thorough inspection to pinpoint the cause and restore consistent, comfortable temperatures throughout your home or business.
  • Spiking energy bills. An abrupt increase in your heating costs without a major change in usage or weather patterns suggests your system is working harder than it should. A furnace or boiler loses efficiency as it ages or as components wear out. We can evaluate your system's performance, identify what is causing the inefficiency, and make the necessary repairs to bring your energy bills back down to a normal level. In some cases, we may recommend replacement, especially if your unit is nearing or has surpassed its expected service life.
